The Fates, or Moirai, are the goddesses of destiny, which even the gods can't escape. They are said to be the daughters of Zeus
and the Titaness Themis ("divine law"), or of the primeval goddess
Ananke ("necessity"). Their Roman counterparts are the Parcae, though
they have also been equated with the Norse Norns.
Clotho — Her name means "spinner," and she is the youngest of the Fates. She
spins the thread of life, and because of this, chooses when someone is
born. Also, she has the power to bring the dead back to life, including
gods. Her Roman equivalent is Nona ("ninth"), who was originally a
goddess of pregnancy, called upon in the ninth month.
Lachesis — Her name means "allotter," and she is the second of the Fates. She
measures the thread of life with her rod, and determines a person's lot
in life, as well as how much time they have. Her Roman equivalent is
Decima ("tenth"), who was originally a goddess of childbirth.
Atropos — Her name means "inexorable" or "inevitable," and she is the oldest
of the Fates. She chooses how a person dies, then cuts the thread of
life with her "abhorred shears". Her Roman equivalent is Morta
("death").
